Yes - 85g and 50d.
I love my 85 and it rarely leaves my camera, the above shot off my daughter was with the 85. You'll get on just fine with it, in comparison my 50mm hardly gets used.
To be fair, that very much reflects my shooting history. I shot a lot on APS-C at between 50 and 70 (in fact, much of it was either 50 or 70) and relatively little at around 35. Given 85 is in the middle of that first range, I'm expecting it to be my go-to lens for a lot of stuff. I also have a Sigma 24-70 walkaround f/2.8 which is fine, but doesn't offer the same sort of quality/sharpness as the prime.
Edited to add: one thing I do notice is the 85mm is a LOT slower to focus from near to infinity than the 50mm. That's despite having its own motor. I found that surprising.
I came from Fuji so focussing speed isn't an issue
The way I use the 85 doesn't require me to focus instantly and I haven't missed any shots because of it. Just mostly down to me
FMCLO's?
What about the Tokina 16-28? http://www.simplyelectronics.net/ma...currency=gbp&gclid=CLvDhpSj_csCFQPgGwoddXAFDg
An option but bloody heavy nearly 3x that of the 20mm. And reports of bad focus accuracy.
Wassat then?I seem to have quenched some GAS and bought a stop gap until my D750 is back (2, maybe 3 years, perhaps???) At least I'll be able to use my lenses!
Matt Granger loves it. I doubt you would beat the 20mm though tbh.
Wassat then?
Thought that '3' was an '8' for a second there.A D300.
Am I missing any options? Looking for a wide angle (preferably a prime) that's 2.8 or quicker. Budget wise ~£450. I think a second hand 20mm 1.8G will fit the bill if I can snag one under budget.
Why f/2.8 or quicker? If you can stretch the aperture a tiny bit, how about a good quality 20mm AI-S f/3.5. Reputedly sharper than a sharp thing going to sharpesville. Manual focus, but that's hardly an issue at 20mm. It'll probably come in at about 2/3 of your budget for a top notch version (maybe as little as half if you're lucky)...
Thought you'd been quiet! I'm hoping so mate, it's pretty old tech and i could have bought ANOTHER D7k but thought I'd have a bash with one of these instead.
Because I want to do more Astro work, I currently have a manual focus 2.8 so wouldn't be gaining anything
Fair enough. How do you find the MF 2.8?
Do you have the Samyang 14mm?
Yup, I think it's good for the money but it's maybe too specialist for me . I think I need something 16-24ish but still keeping a fast aperture. Would also be nice to have AF for weddings etc
@SsSsSsSsSnake maybe not wide enough.
@minnnt reviews seem all over the place for it, and it weights about a kilo!

A D300.
A mate of mine has one as a backup to his D800 and also uses it as a remote camera. When used within its limits I've been impressed with the image quality.Yeah, D300 was my second camera. Ok up to iso 1600 (just) but a good back up for a silly price.
Thanks minnnt, that's my favourite too. I tried the 70-200 for the first time there, it seem to help deal with the shadows better. Normally I've gone with a wide angle but it's hard to deal with the deep shadows when the sunset disappears before sunset.Nice rob. Like the first especially.
@f/2.8 i never really found the D7k wanting with regards to AF tbh but i know it was a hot topic amongst the masses.
