Beginner Nikon D750 non auto focus

I have a strange problem.

I have a D750 which functions correctly.

I use mostly a 80-200 2.8 lens which functions correctly on the D750,

I have recently bought a 28-70 2.8 lens which will only focus manually despite camera and lens being set to auto focus and the aperture ring locked at 22.

However if I put this lens on my old D3000 the lens works as intended.

As a beginner I am now at a loss.

@gramps on here tried to help me a bit yesterday but cannot find the thread.

Any help would be appreciated. I have tried to reset the camera settings, removed the battery for a while to see if that helps but I'm now grasping at straws.

Are you using the shutter button to focus or back button focus?

I saw one comment suggesting it was an issue when using Spot Metering, another an issue when using AF-S and changing to AF-C worked but it does look as though that lens may not be the best choice for your camera.
