Nikon D80 help please

Hi all,have done a search & can't find the answer so thought I'd ask the question

On the front a the D80 is a function button which the manual says is assignable to various things ie ISO settings etc( uless of course I've misunderstood).

I've read the official Nikon manual,I've read Ken Rockwells simpletons guide but cannot find out how you get it to do different things.
I want to get mine to change AF area modes to save having to go into the menu. I've pressed it & twiddled the various wheels,dials & other buttons to no avail
Anyone help please?

Page 92 of your user manual is a good place to start

To be able to see the menu item that lets you set the FUNC button you have to have full menues selected (CSM/Setup menu).

FUNC setting is in CUSTOM, option 16

Ah,thanks Bristolian,found the menu before but couldn't get anything to change,scrolled up n down bo the different options but never thought to press OK:bang:
