Hi chaps. Just noticed on my D800 round the view finder there is some orange mark. Mainly on the bottom. But on closer inspection it looks all the way round like it might be a seal. Maybe gone bad. Photos make it look worse than it is.
Any ideas of what it is. Doesn’t affect the view or anything.
Thanks.

Looks like rust!
The whole eyepiece will unscrew so you can check it.

have you unscrew that rubber ring, First you need to close the shutter, that little switch on the side . That will get you to the diaoptic glass. when removed it should say which diaoptic lens it is something like this
Very easy to change and replace with new. Once off remove the metal retaining ring and keep the new may not come with one

That’s brilliant thanks.
Took the rubber ring off. Located a tiny screw in the top and off it popped. Cleaned the big bit with an ear bud. And the culprit is either the metal ring or the glass. 8683DF3E-93F8-4089-9431-57C92F657DD7.jpegC93F6460-7A2F-469A-A9A9-030B617E632D.jpeg

How do you get the glass out of the ring. As I could clean it better that way. Tried to push it but did t want to bust it.

It doesn't come out IIRC but replacement eyepieces inc magnifier eyepieces are available.

Just looked for a new one and most of them are just for the ring. No glass so though they might of done.

little tip for you, never ever use an ear bud around a camera because the fine hairs on them you will never get rid of especially if cleaning the sensor

What you need are these a proper round tip swab. there are spade ended ones as well for sensors etc

Amazon have them as well

Roger that mate I do have the proper ones for the sensor. And I washed the eye piece and dried it with a hair dryer. And finished with lens wipe. I’m a bit of a cowboy. Was going to use my toothbrush

at least your issue is resolved and that is the main thing. I had the D800 up to a few days ago and sold it to a member on here. Keeping the D810 and also have a D300 as part of my kit
