Nikon D800 sample with 100% crop.

Here is a random shot I took recently with the D800, using a 70-200 f2.8 nikon VR1 at 170mm. This is sooc, no processing and no sharpening.

...and here is a 100% crop with a little intruder that my old eyes never saw at the time, again no pp and no sharpening!

Good enough for me!

Its much an impressive body. Im really in 2 minds about if i can afford one as at the moment the Mrs said its either the d800 or my man hood (iv still not decided on what one i want most yet)

Bibio marci, St. Mark's fly (male).

Superb detail, I can make out the two spines on the end of the hind tibia that identify it as marci

Thanks for the id, Adam, I take it you mean the two spikes coming out of his knee? The files do seem to have tremendous detail, and are a lot sharper (straight from camera) than files from the D700 I had before it.

Yes, there is a similar looking fly called the fever fly that has a little ring of smaller spines in the same place instead of the two spines. They look different in other places, but it struck me as remarkable that you can see those spines on this image .

The females look very different in this species (or to use the "lingo" they show strong sexual dimorphism). Much fatter with cloudy wings and small eyes.
