Nikon D800

strange they've upped the megapixels to 24.

Seems to me a lot of D700 users like the fact it's only 12MP

I think that this has been posted on here about a month ago, not near the computer at the moment though.

I think if the D800 ups the ante and mega pixcel count , there will be a raft of D700's in the classifieds. Bring it on!

I expect this will be a pricey body when released and unless you have to have things as they become available then i suspect the best time to buy one would be January 2012 if it is released in June-July 2011.

I have a feeling unless you really want video or 24 MP then many will remain faithful to the D700 for a while as it is so good.

What do you think this D800 will sell for around a month after coming out? RRP of £2500 with it possibly being a street price of around £2100 or just over? I guess more MP would be nice, but aside from being able to crop heavily, any other benefits? HD Movie... not really fussed although it would be nice to film using a 50mm 1.4 lens, or even a 2.8 lens to get results that would blow a camcorder away.

Why?

Oops sorry, my mistake, some people want the latest gear in the hope that it will improve their abilities..................Sorry,my mistake.

If Nikon bring out another high spec body i'd imagine it's to fit between the D700 & D3s, the price gap is a mere £1700+

Well Canon took few years to get from 5D to 5D mkII, could be similar with mkIII

Could be, but they had that market segment all to themselves back then, now they have Nikon and Sony chasing the same customers, so I reckon they'll up their game pretty soon....

I loved Mpix on 5d2 .... only reason I moved to d700 was AF...
And I do miss Mpix from 5d2 :'(

Now, if Nikon releases d800(or whatever they will call it) with higher Mpix count then d700 with other features from D700, I will go for it (if my wallet will allow me to ;) )

Call me Pixel peeper if you want, I dont care

Maybe a daft question, but oft sighted as the main reason the D700 is great at low light is the photosite size against total number of pixels.

If they increase the pixel count, and then sensor remains the same size, how would they achieve the same levels of sensitivity?

12mp was enough for me yesterday, it's enough for me today and it'll be enough for me tomorrow.

If Nikon do release a direct successor to the D700 they could introduce other improvements over megapixels as far as I'm concerned.

The sensor won't remain the same.

Technology moves on, barriers are broken.

I understand the sensor will not remain the same, as there is talk of a higher pixel count - so it could not be the same.

Question is, will it be the same size? If so, the advantage the D700 has now is the size of the individual pixels/photosites (larger than most) - which would need to be reduced in size to fit more of them on the sensor.

Maybe the technology improvements would allow a smaller photosite to collect as much light as a larger one.... but I'm done if I can see how!

I agree and the shop price may be pretty high due to the strength of the Yen as well.

If it is spec'd as rumoured I'd guess they might price it with an RRP of around £3k for the body at the outset.

The 24MP sensor is (presumably) the same one as in the D3X... which sits very nicely with the D3S as two cameras for different needs. For example, the X excels in the studio and the S is fantastic in low light.

Surely the D800 will be pitched to sit alongside the D700 in the same way rather than competing with or replacing it. Different cameras for different jobs.

If it is then they'll need a different name for it, otherwise they'll be tripping over themselves when they come to replace either model....

Well, it will be the same physical size (unless something reall crazy happens)... it will be the same (approx) size as a 35mm negative... it has to be for it to still be 35mm... otherwise it would be something else :)

Can photosites increase in performance whilst decreasing in size? Of course! Evolution of the DSLR has shown this throughout its history. Its all to do with controlling electronic noise, either in the hardware or the software controlling it (or a combination of both).

Personally, I still think the D700's replacement will either ape the D3S or be the next step, a modest increase to about 16mp and the sure to come D4 will also use the same sensor.

It just depends whether Nikon choose to make an interim update to the D700 or use it to herald their next technological advance.

I'd probably guess at a D700S... saving the big bang for the D4.

I think Nikon are also likely to go for maximum return on the money spent developing the D3s sensor, so it would seem sensible to put it in a D700 s
