Nikon D90 or 3200

hi All

i recently had to sell my d90 and lenses to pay a debt but as i worked all of Christmas and new year and can fund a replacement

but do i get a second hand D90 from MPB or a 3200 new from Currys (or similar shop)


i loved my d90 and found it an amazing camera but the thought of something new (3200) does appeal but dont want to be disappointed


any help appreciated
 
have you thought of a d7000?

Although the d3200 is newer tech than the d90, it will be a significant step back in handling imo
 
i was hoping to spend under £300 on lens and body and the 7000 is £350 body only

did look but think its a bit out of my current price range
 
If you are planning using the older D lenses like the 50mm 1.8d I would say go for the D90.

This is a valid point. The D3XXX and D5XXX bodies need AF-S or equivalent lenses to autofocus, whereas the D90 and D7000 (and every other body in the last few years) have a built-in AF motor. Also, I've never used a D90 but I used D3100 and although its excellent value for money, I found the viewfinder tiny and dim, and the external controls are limited.
 
Personally I'd go with the D90. I bought a D3200 just to see what all the fuss about very high resolution sensors was about and frankly I was underwhelmed.

The image processor in the D3200 is nice and the auto-ISO implementation is better but thats about it, the D90 offers better viewfinder, better ergonomics, more controls, top LCD plate, and the AF screw drive (although I think this is a moot point nowadays).
 
The D3200 is a nice little camera, and perfect for someone like my GF who takes casual snaps but if you're used to a D90 handling it might be good to get another.

Looking on MPB, I'd be inclined to get the £169 body on there and have a bit extra money left over for a half decent lens compared to the kit lens you'd probably have to get with the D3200.

I would go with the D90 better the devil you know and its cheaper for lens.
The D90 has a great solid feel to it and I am biased as that what I use.
 
In our house we have a d3200 and a d80( older version of d90).
Always surprised by the features and usability of the d80. Keep it below say ISO 800 and all is well.
Do mean though that my daughter nicks all my d lenses. Usually my 105d micro!

Couldn't agree more.

When I bought a D7100 (to replace my D90) I was also underwhelmed by the sensor. What I did notice about the 24mp over 12mp sensor was it was far more dependant on good light to get the very best from of it. Quite a few D300 owners on here expressed the same view and went back to their 12mp D300s for bird shooting.

In answer to the original poster, I'd go for the D90 for the same reasons as Nawty says - plus it'll take you longer to grow out of the D90 over D3200.
 
thanks all a d90 it is. seen one on mpb and going to get a 28-300 lens initially then the grip too

i always missed my d90 next time i need some cash will be selling a kidney !!
 
This is all v interesting, as I was thinking of buying the 7100 to upgrade my D80. not having many pennies myself., I bought the 35m 1.8 from advice on here before Xmas. rather than the upgrade, was really happy with that decision. maybe will hold off buying new body and invest in a further lens. see, its worth while coming on here and browsing. cheers all.

It depends what you are shooting. I had the d80 with the 35mm and the 18-135 lens. Whilst it was good in daylight the noise was a bit too much indoors for me even at low iso such as 400. Upgrade to D90 and the iso is good up to 800.
