hey, i hope someone can help i just brought a nikon d90, been using it and been very happy until today (only brought it 3 days ago) the top lcd screen displayed f-- and wouldnt take a photo, i turned it off took out the mem card + battery and tried the reset with the two buttons still didnt work until i removed the lens then re-fitted it, then it worked....? :help:

anyway it just did it again... a few hours after the previous..

its a nikon 18-105mm lens brought as a kit...
 
It'll display that when the lens isn't seated correctly. You may have knocked the release and twisted it ever so slightly.
 
Just tried it on my D40. The slightest twist of the lens and the body doesn't realise there's one attached.

I'm afraid in this case it's your fault :p not the cameras :lol:

EDIT: It could be the lens doesn't sit right, which could be a lens or body fault. Make sure the lens is on right, then power the camera on and try twisting the lens in the release direction and see what happens. DON'T try to twist too hard!

Like I said, mount the lens, and make sure it's mounted correctly, then try gently twisting in the release direction. If it displays the F-- again, then maybe take it back and ask to try a different lens. If you were closer I'd pop over with a lens, but Norfolk's too damn far!

Try it now, it may be the lens doesn't mount properly for one reason or another, or it may be you're accidentally catching it :p
 
how would i knwo if it was mounting correctly? would there be movement when its attached or would it just not slide very easily into place?
 
Ok, I'm not sure how well this translates onto a D90, but on my D40 I did this:
1)Make sure the lens is mounted correctly
2)Power on the camera
3)Switch the camera to manual and make sure the LCD is lit up with the shooting screen, showing shutter speed and aperture
4)With this screen showing twist the lens gently and see if the F number changes to 'F--' like before. To bring up the screen again press the 'info'. On my D40 it's to the lower left of the shutter release button. If the F number doesn't blank out then it's a safe bet that you've been catching the lens release by accident :)
 
if i twist the lens slightly then the lcd says f-- does this mean the lens may be faulty??? surely i shudnt have to do this as often as i have ??
 
I'd say it shouldn't do that. Where'd you buy the camera from?

its really annoying cos its alot of money and it says on there reciept not eligible return, so i guess i have to send it bk to nikon..
 
mate, if the lens is slotted in properly you shouldn't be able to shift it at all!!!

examine the mount and see if there are anything abnormal there, both the camera and the lens. that issue is common on AF-D lenses when people forget to lock the lens aperture ring to f22. but this is a DX lens there is no aperture ring control.

suggest try another lens see if the symptom is repeating, just making sure that its not the body, also check to see if there are any thing that might make the metal contacts not touching, maybe some grease or dust? or a piece of paper - wishful thinking that one!
 
lol ok will give it ago looking at new lens anyway so hopefully when i try them it will be ok, if so then i'll send the lens away to be checked..
 
You can still return it to Argos as faulty for replacement or refund. The no-exchange only relates to their discretionary no-quibble returns policy i.e. if you just don't like it etc. If it is faulty they are required by law (Sale of Goods Act) to repair or replace it. On something under 30 days old the normal Argos policy is to replace it straight away.

agree with the above post as well, you can even show the numtties that the camera isn't working if they give you a fuss over it

yeah thats true, cheers for all the help guys, sorry i'm quite new to dslr's becos of having a bridge camera before didnt have to worry about the lenses lol
 
My D90 has done the same in the past (f-- ) i think it must be a contact thing because i get (f--) when i attach an old 400mm lens with an adapter & have to set the apeture manually.

Argos - no return - yeah right........... KICK OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rules:

It's a Nikon "quirk", the D80 was famous for it....
