Question: If you had the option to buy either the Nikon D90 or the Canon 50D and then expand on the lenses which would you chose and why?

I want to upgrade towards the end of the year, maybe even in the summer. I currently own an Olympus E-300 with the 4/3rds fitment so i understand i wont be able to use those lenses.

I will be using it for Landscapes and Portraits so are the Nikon flash kits better then canon etc..

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Cheers, Stevo

If I didn't have anything in either system at the moment, I'd be inclined to go for the D90 over the 50D... Both are very versatile cameras but with regards to these two models, I think that Nikon have the better camera!

(I'm going to need to go and wash my mouth out now and then lay down in a dark corner! ;) )

I've not bought either but i did try both and to me D90 seemed and felt better in the hands.

I suppose that the 1st port of call would be try both in your hands but not whilst they are alarmed to a cabinet but actually free. As i did that with d90 1st and didn't like it then i actually tried again and i loved it.

I see we have a couple of D90 owners saying go for the D90, so I'll redress the balance; go for the 50D ;) Tis cheap now and the build quality is better than the D90.

Also:

50D: 14bit at 6.3fps, D90: 12bit at 4.5fps
50D: 15mp, D90: 12mp
50D: af micro adjust (so good!), D90: n/a
50D has a better AF system too.

Anyway, don't listen to us; go hold them both in your hands and see which one you like best.

I've used both and would have to say the 50D would be my choice.

It's bigger and heavier (which I like) and just feels more sturdy.

From a techy point of view it also has the edge.

Much of a muchness really - go with whichever feels best for you.

I'd be more inclined to compare the 50D against a D300 than a D90

I know someone who has made the choice between the two recently - Rob Bartley.

What say you, Rob? (He went for the D90, pah!)

The 50D is more of a camera compared to the D90, better build, ISO, and better controls on the outside (I think). And this is regardless of the fact I have a D300s...

I'd go with the 50D, Oh i did! I didn't like how the D90 felt in my hands, the 50D felt Goooooooooood.

The lenses are an important factor because that is where your investment will be. Consider the types of shots you want to take and lenses you will need, and then see who offers them.

For example, Canon offer the 70-200mm lens in f4 and f2.8 versions, both with and without IS. However, Nikon only offer an f2.8 VR (IS) option, which some may not need the stabilisation or wide aperture.

Well............................:help:

No seriously, I was in this position just before christmas. In the end I could put my hand on my heart and say that they are both very, very good cameras and it was a difficult choice. In the end I went for the D90 due to price. It was approx £200 less for the body and kit lens over the canon.

Also, I have quite small hands (i.e. I am a weed!) and the Nikon just felt slightly more comfortable to me.

Just to prove I'm not fussed about the age old Canon v Nikon debate :whistling: I did have a Canon EOS film SLR when I was a teenager, over 20 years ago now...........................

Cheers, Rob

When I was looking to upgrade at Xmas I was set on a D90 and then went and picked up a 50d which threw my life fully into turmoil such was the beautiful feel and build of the Canon.

I resolved it by buying the D300s and have never looked back from your choice I would probably plump for the the Canon

Well the replies above should be enought to convince you that the choice of what to buy has to be yours. Go and try them in a shop.:)

I was making the same decision just before Christmas. I was torn between the two of them, but in the end I went for the 50D because it felt better in my hands and I preferred the weight.
