Would anyone recommend buying the 2008 model body?

Only I'm looking to upgrade my body hopefully in the new year. I currently have the D3000. main reason I'm looking to upgrade is because I want to start my collection of lenses. But my biggest problem at min it's that I'm restricted because off my body. It doesn't have the built in focus motor so to get good lenses with the af-s costs a fortune. For example, next lens I want is the 70-200 f/2.8.

The af-s model is about £1,500 where as the af model is about £900 so the cost of the new body is recouped straight away, plus savings on other lenses.

Yes you can get >200mm af-s lenses for about 250, but obviously restricted but the limited aperture.


So can anyone recommended buying a nearly 4 yrs old body or any alternatives?
 
What about a D300? Stretch a bit more and get one of those

Looking at those the D90 does seem the better of the two. And compared to the low iso of the D300(1600)

I did a test the other day of my D5000 (same sensor as the D90) vs the D300 (again, more or less the same sensor) at various ISO's. I really cannot see any difference whatsoever and nor should there be. It looks like KR was shooting JPEG which means that the noise reduction is being done in camera and relying on the camera's software. If you shoot raw like myself, the difference simply doesn't exist.

But anyway, this is probably straying slightly off topic. The D90 is a fine camera and something of a bargain now that the D7000 has had an impact on used prices.
 
One more thing. I may be wrong, but I think both 70-200 VR and VRII lenses are AF-S (and hence will af on a D3000). Are you not thinking of the 80-200 2.8 AF-D? I think they can be picked up for much more reasonable sums.

Yeah I could of been mixing them up, either way the difference in price between the motorised and non motorised is still silly. my 50mm 1.8 I have is a half of the price of the af-s version
