Evening all, newbie so please be gentle... having turned 21 today (+17 more) my good lady has said I can have a new lens for my D40. I've seen the nikon 55-200mm VR DX lens on amazon new for £155 which, I believe, is a fantastic price but can I use a DX lens on my D40?? Thanks in advance

Any DX lens will work and are designed specifically for crop sensors such as the D40. The 55-200 VR is a good lens by all accounts but do beware that it is not a grey import - even from Amazon. Although Nikon lenses have a world wide warranty I believe it can get a bit tricky if it came from overseas.

Have look in the for sale section on here as there is some good stuff available. If not have a look at the second hand suppliers in the sticky post in the bargains section on here.

HTH

Nick

Hi Nick, thanks for message, from what you can see from the link above, is that a "grey import" being completely honest - not really sure what one of them is??

i always price cross-check with UK shops/UK online sellers

the lens you are after sells for about £220 at both Parks Cameras and Clifton Cameras

so check out what you get at Amazon - it's prob the same lens but purchased from overseas and sold on to you
if you are offered a "return to Seller" warranty - then it's def a grey import - and you MAY have warranty probs if anything happens

OneStopDigital - a reputable online importer- list this lens at £162 so my guess Amazon imported too

BUT it's £70 cheaper - so you balance that against does anything go wrong with a lens in it's first year ............

I got one used, mint, Nikon Warranty included [not worth anything but showed me it was from UK] ---£123 delivered

Thanks guys, just checked and it says comes with UK 12 month warranty but as FITP pointed out, for another £3 I could get 24 month warranty - Think I might try and change order - Thanks again.

I can't make out whether the dearer (+£3) listing is actually Amazon or not.
Reason being that I believe Amazon Marketplace sellers can let Amazon post and package.

But both listings claim to be UK stock.

Generally true as DX lenses are also AF-S lenses (that autofocus on the D40 etc); except for the 10.5 mm f/2.8G AF DX fish-eye. But, although it won't autofocus, that lens is still most useable as you simply leave it set it to infinity for most shots and let DoF do the rest.
