Just wondering if anyone has or has used a Nikon ED 80-200 F2.8 Push/Pull Lens ?

Seen one for sale and I quite fancy a fast zoom
 
Well done! Being in the situation of going for that or the newer two ring version, my research points to the latter having quicker AF. Hope you enjoy it.

Yeah I did read that also but I never had the choice of the newer two version model. But this one does also seem to have good reviews

I cannot complain for £98 :thumbs:

I thought I had a bargain when I paid £191!

Its a cracking lens though. I had the latest D version then a 70-200VR ( and a brief love affair with an 80-200 AF-S that developed a fault and couldnt be fixed by Nikon :()
My current 20 odd year old lens that looks like it was used as a demolition tool at some time in its life is as sharp as any of them and better than the latest D version.
I dont think the AF is particularly slow as long as you limit its focus range.

It has a fault, it was owned by a pro-sports photographer and he dropped it on some asto-turf. This has resulted in the push pull action of the zoom being stiff sometimes. But apart from that it works great and has no scratches on it etc.

This is of course off ebay so hopefully what he says is correct... time will tell
 
I'm guessing that's the one on Ebay UK that got dropped on the floor? (edit: post above posted at more or less same time explains all ;) )

Hope it works out well, if it does its a deal at 98!

haha no but I did see it up for sale the last days, decided to wait a bit though and go VR II ;)
 
to be honest if its optically fine but just a job zooming then at the very least you bought yourself a very cheap 200mm f 2.8 prime ;)

Yeah exactly what I thought, for that price I don't care if its totally jammed at some focal length (but hope its not)


I hope to use this for wedding and portrait :thumbs:
 
OK just an update but got the lens today, and I am well chuffed. It hardly sticks at all and only at 200mm.

Here is a photo taken tonight in dull light at F2.8 (resized for web but nothing else done)

I picked one of these up for around £55 at the current exchange rate (80 Swiss francs) about a year ago and it really is an amazing lens. Ths one is the first version with no fewer than 4 focus limit settings. It lacks contrast wide open, but the detail is still there. Stop it down a couple stops and it's pretty much as good as any top notch modern lens.

At the price I paid I practically stole it.

Better than the other way round - the zoom-action on these lenses sometimes got a bit loose, so that the lens would 'zoom-out' if left to hang around the neck or off the shoulder...

Optically they're virtually as good as Nikon's newest offerings.

I had this lens and optically I couldn't fault it. I enjoy photographing church interiors including the ceilings, and the problem I found was that when the lens was vertical the zoom slipped due to its own weight. So perhaps the fact that the one on ebay is stiff is an advantage.
 
Is it the version with the limiter switch or the one with the ring that we are talking about here?
I just sold my one which had the ring (older I believe) for £350.

Thanks for the feedback, I am doing a shoot tomorrow so I will give it a good try then :thumbs:

Biggest problem so far (if you can call it a problem) is I cannot fit my camera in my bag with this lens on. It has a nice big leather case for the lens but I dont want to really carry that around. I have also had to order a different lens cap as I cannot get the lens cap on or off when the lens hood is on. I have ordered a center pinch type to make it easier

There is no switch on this one just a ring at the end, £350 :eek: Crikey I did get a bargain then

No seriously yeah these are probably old lenses I just managed to get one off ebay at a good price and it seems a cracking lens

That's the one I had.
There's one that's very similar but has the crinkle coating on the slidey bit too and a switch (which tends to fall off) rather than the ring to limit the AF.

Prices aside it was a stunning lens, I was worried about AF speed but on a D3 and a D200 it was fast enough. It ain't light though, especially compared to the Canon 70-200 f4 I have now.

Yeah the AF is fine on my D90 but good God its heavy, well at least to what I am used to, and its massive. I am having great problems trying to find a place for it as it wont fit in my Lowepro slingshot bag :shake:

For most of the time I had mine I only had the D3 and swapped between this lens and a 24-70mm, I got a LowePro lens case with shoulder strap which fitted either lens with hood attached. I think it's smaller than the 70-200 f2.8 lenses but probably heavier.

I was looking for a lens case earlier but could not find anything :shrug:

Probably typed wrong thing into Google :cuckoo:
 
I have that lens & it's a cracker of a lens. But I bought mine from ebay in Germany for €600 2 years ago.
 
Now that is a good alternative to the 80-200AF-S lens... I have been thinking of getting the AF-S lens as can't justify the 70-200.. Will see what I can find.. Cheers

Yeah it does seem a really well built lens and its all metal and bloody heavy. My lens is the ED version but not sure what that means to be honest
