Nikon F801s or a Compact Superzoom

Hey guys!

Basically I'm off travelling over the next few months, and have about 150-200 pounds with which to buy a camera to record all those special moments:p

I've been browsing various sites, threads and reviews, resulting basically in a dilemma as to whether to get one of the new so called 'superzooms', or pick up an old 35mm.

To be more specific i'm really torn between the Sony H-20 (about 200pounds), and a Nikon F801s with a 50mm f/1.8 AF Nikkor (150 in total)

Obviously the Sony would be easier to use etc, but i feel with the Nikon i might be able to get some truly amazing pictures.

Can anyone offer any help or guidance, i'm really stuck on this one..:(

I love film and have several SLR's but would not take one on a extended hol for the fact of packing so much film.
The beauty of digital is the storage capacity of SD or flash cards.
For that reason I would go for a Good compact.......Vote #1

For around £200 you could pick up a used dSLR which would be far better option. You should be able to find Canon 20D, 350D (or 10D failing that) or Nikon D40, d50 around that price (I've done that exercise for someone with the exact budget last April).
Compact superzoom is not great in terms of picture quality, but will still capture the moments. It is a seriously limited equipment without going into further details.

Now film is a no no for travel these days. First, X-Ray scanners will kill your film (happened to me). The how much film can you take, and are you prepared to live with prints only? I wouldn't if you are not a pro with established workflow.

I'll be away for periods of 6 weeks, 4 weeks, but they 3 and a half months so I see your point

In the classifieds here there is a Nikon d40 i'm tempted by.

My worry though is that i want to effectively mirror the texture and richness of these pictures below, shot on a friend of a friends Olympus OM4. In general i find digital images quite bland, even if they are more accurate. Or can a similar effect be created?

Processing makes a big difference. Personally I would call these 4 a bit bland due to lack of colour and proper light. Then if you want something like no1 you need a fast prime (50mm f/1.8-1.4, 30mm f/1.8) - superzoom will never get there though.

Thankyou for you excellent replies

Okay, i've decieded to cast aside the superzoom idea:D

I know due to forum rules i can't link to it, but there is a Nikon D40 with a AFS DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens going for 230 or the body at 160 here http://www.lcegroup.co.uk/SHdetails.asp?Item=16020

I think the lack of light is mainly due to the rainforest climate (!), but is that slightly bland, but personally very appealing, look due to it being shot on film or can you get it by way of processing/ filters/ technique?

Calm down, you can't mix canon bodies with nikon lenses.

So is it film you are going for or digital?

Was a mistake, the one in the classifieds is a Nikon D40  As was the one i posted a link too.

I'm trying to ascertain whether it is worth spending the extra 100 or so pounds on a digital. I'm mainly trying to produce the same kind of image as the ones posted above, so currently it seems pretty unworthwhile. It seems to me that if i get a f801 body and then a nice lens, I can always pick up a cheap Nikon digital body and just move the lens over later on if needed?
