Nikon Flash Options

Looking to buy my first flash to accompany my D750. After something decent but not to break the bank. The SB700 looks about my best bet. Any suggestions for 3rd party flashes, or am I best to stick to Nikon.

To be used for portraits, indoors shots at weddings etc.
 
Stick with nikon! Better in long run! I bought cheap and ended up with a sb910!
Get an 800 or a 910! The 900 overheats!

I agree with the sticking with Nikon part but the flash will only overheat if you take too many photos in quick succession. If you're taking a few at a time eg wedding posed photos I'd expect it to stay cool. I've never had a problem with mine.

I have both 600 and 900 but the 900 has the little built in bounce white card thing which I use most of the time. I find it gives a nice bounced light with no red eye and even illumination. It does use more power than a direct flash but the light is so much better. It won't beat a softbox but is hard to beat for convenience.

sb-700 has the bounce card too

Yes, that's the downside of the 900 but it can act as a controller for other Nikon flashes which might be useful further down the line if Andrew expanded his system.

Every day is a school day! Thanks, I didn't know that. It might also have the flash controller built in too?

What is more important to you Andrew, higher power or smaller size?

The 910 has high speed flash too! Bounce card and commander! Do the others???

I think it is only the 800 and 900 series that have all those functions. Obviously the higher up the range the more features and greater the price.
 
Another vote for the SB-700, great features and bright enough for everything other than single handedly lighting up the Royal Albert Hall ;)

The SB-910 is huge in comparison, and almost dwarfs the D750. It's great for studio and tripod work, but for me the SB-700 is the perfect all rounder, and perfect compliment to the D750
 
I have two SB700's onboard my bodies for my wedding work, can't praise them enough.

More than adequate unless fighting the midday sun then the little extra the 900 or 910 might be the only time I'd need it.

Whilst the SB800 is a workhorse the menu system is much older and is a bit rubbish to work through.
 
I have a sb900 and never had any problems with it, it is a large flashgun. A couple of weeks ago I used a friends sb700, I loved it, it's so easy to change menu etc, and the size is great. I am wanting another flash and like you, wasn't sure of a cheapy or a Nikon , but it's going to be a 700 for me
