Will they work on a D200 or similar? As far as I can see they will but just looking for confirmation :)

Yes they work fine on the d200, well at least my 50mm afs 1.4 does.

Aye, I've spent most of tonight researching what's the best bang for the cash.

I've narrowed it down to either a G or a couple of older lenses which by all accounts are pretty sharp. I'm trying to keep to a strict budget though as this is an experiment to help decide whether or not I dump Canon, really disappointed with the price point of the MkIV, I just feel they're taking the P.
 
Just to add that G lenses will work on any Nikon DSLR and certainly the later SLRs too (such as the F80), basically any Nikon where you can control the aperture from the body rather than needing an aperture ring.
