Looking for some advice, in my research on which DSLR I should replace my Olympus with I've been looking at just about every system and have an idea of what I would buy body and lens wise in each.
However while for Nikon I would buy a D90 or D300 I haven't really got a clue with lenses, what is a good general walkabout lens on a APS-C Nikon?

I'm thinking third party would be the usual suspects, Tamron 17-50 or Sigma 17-70, but what about Nikon lenses?

Well the 18-55 kit lens is a bargain, might be worth getting that and waiting to see what kind of photography you're into, before splashing out on some glass you mgiht not use loads.

I got a D40 with the kit lens, found I really enjoy doing portraits, got he Sigma 50-150mm f2.8, wanted something wider, just ordered the Tokina 11-16 f2.8

Neither would be that useful if you found yourself wanting to take photos of eagles!

What I'm trying to say is that everyone has a different lens nearly permanently on their camera, so it might be worth waiting a bit before buying something really expensive to see what would suit your needs best.

If you get the D90 the 18-105mm kit lens is a good un. I'd say go for that and see how you get on.

17-55mm is not a VR lens - don't get this great lens confused with the 18-55 'kit' lens!

As suggested, you need to have an idea of what you want to shoot or at least your main interest.
I have a Nikon 16-85 vr, which is a very good all round lens works very well on my D80, its almost on all the time, i also have a sigma 17-70 f2.8 which hardly gets used now i have the 16-85,
The 17-70 is also good with the benifit of f2.8 and macro, of course some what cheaper.
But i would rate the 16-85 as a far better lens, having said that i do understand the 17-55 nikon is a real nice sharp lens...

Take your pick .....

Depending on budget, and range:- (In no particular order) all of these are fine lenses, and will serve you well.

18-70 Kit Lens
18-105VR Kit Lens
16-85 VR
17-55 f2.8 Nikkor or Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (Cheaper and lighter option)
28-105 f3.5-f4.5 (only available used around £150)

I have had a number of lenses, started off with kit 18-55, then the 18-105 with my d90. The 18-105 was better, and a very good focal range, but wanted better glass so got an 18-70 which is a cracking little lens. Then I got the 'biggie', a 17-55 2.8. You can really see and feel the difference, very solid and super IQ, it is very hard to go from that to a non-2.8 lens.

Overall you get what you pay for. the 17-55 2.8 is the best DX zoom lens.

It depends on what you want to do, but I love the 16-85 VR as a walk-around. With the 35mm 1.8 it makes a nice light travel kit.

if on a budget and buying say a d90 just get the kit lens to go with it, the 18-105vr is fine in most general situations
