Nikon GP-1.

OK, so I don't actually have a proper Nikon GP-1, rather an ebay version that does the same/similar thing for between a third and a quarter of the price.
But the question is the same.

I like the idea of embedding where I took (some of) my photos into the EXIF. But, when you connect a (copy) GP-1 to my D700, it takes between a few seconds to a few minutes to establish exactly where in the world I am. If you take a photo straight away, before it has done this, it embeds the location of the last place it thinks you were.

So, I configure my D700 ( in the setup, GPS ,auto-meter off, off) so that when the (copy) gp-1 is attached, that the exposure meters stay on (auto meter off=off...............are you keeping with this!!) whist the camera is receiving a GPS signal. That way every time I take a shot, the correct GPS info is embedded. But, that means I chew my way through batteries. 3 EN-EL3e's in a day is easy.

So, am I doing any damage to my camera's meter or sensor, as they are always on? I can't imaging that a proper GP-1 is any better at receiving the GPS info, so any proper GP-1 users will know the issue I'm on about.......

No it won't damage the meter/sensor.

Yes Nikon's implementation of GPS sucks. (If it's any consolation I hear the cheapie ones are actually better than Nikon's). There really should be a way to feed the small amount of power it needs to keep a fix without keeping the camera on.

if it's any help, an I-GOTU GT-600 (the one with a motion detector) + HoudahGeo works really well.
