Right,

I've went mad and listed my gear in the canon section.

I'm pretty much sorted with my choice of nikon kit, however I'm lost as to what general lens I can get for the D700.

Having sold my canon 24-105mm IS, I need a replacement.

Is there any decent mid range zooms for the nikon for around £500?

Thanks

Ian, I wish I had the spare 1k for it, my budget is only £500 at the moment but that lens is on my wish list.

Made the move from Canon myself. Couldn't afford the 24-70. Considered the Tammy but went with the older Nikkor 28-70 2.8 (the beast). Not now considering changing up to the 24-70, it's very very good. Look around, can sometimes be found within your budget. Last one on here sold for £500. Gotta be quick though !

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8? You'll probably get change from £300 if you buy used...

I use this on my D700 while I wait until I get enough for the 24-70. It's a great lens for the price (around £200 now for a used one). One of those and a 50mm 1.4 and thats's two great lenses with change from £500.

I bought the 28-75 2.8 for £180 used as a stop-gap until I got the 24-70 Nikkor, but having lived with it for a while now I honestly can't see myself spending another £900-odd to get a marginal increase in IQ, faster focusing, and a load more weight and bulk. The 28-75 is a great performer, it would be a bargain at double what I paid for it.

The Tamron 28-75 is the obvious choice to my mind if you need something now and can't stretch any further. The Nikon 28-70 2.8 goes for about £650 second hand if you can shell out a little more than your £500 budget though so may be worth considering.

Personally, I think every good D700 deserves the amazing Nikon 24-70 though so I'd start saving now if I were you. :p

:agree:

That is exactly what I was about to recommend.

I've just seen the 17-35mm vr and as that is a well used range on the my 5d (17-40mm) I'm leaning towards the combo of D700, 17-35mm, 105mm VR Micro and 70-200 f2.8.

Can then look at getting D300(s), 24-70mm and a 50mm at a much later date.

I know what its like with money literally burning a hole in your pocket as I've been there but I would heartily recommend that if possible you hold back, save a bit more and get that 24-70mm f2.8 Nikon as a first port of call. The lens is literally that good from the versatility to the quality of the optics - this lens is *scary* sharp thats how good it is.

I've had all sort of lenses from Canon to Nikon but never have I encountered anything as good as this lens - period.

You'd get a used Nikon 35-70mm F2.8 and still have change......
