Nikon HN-3 hood compatibility?

hello there,

just found a Nikon HN-3 hood inside my bag - godknows what i used it for maybe twenty years ago. I have a Nikon 24mm though i doubt i can use it on this lens (corner vignetting, i seem to understand).

Wondering if I could safely use it on my old Nikon 50mm series E, though - or while being perfectly safe would it also be useless? - since it fits....pros&cons, in your opinion?

Did it not occur to you to use Google? In less time than it took you to write this post, you'd have learned that it's designed for a 35mm f/1.4 or 35mm f/2. But obviously, since it's a screw-in model it will physically fit any lens with the same size front element. If it fits a 24mm lens, it won't be suitable because it will vignette in the corners. If it fits a 50mm lens, it will give you some protection from impacts but it won't give you as much shade from unwanted light as a dedicated hood would.

i didn't join this forum to be patronized. I did google it first to avoid wasting people's time, and here's what i found at Nikon US:

as you notice it's also compatible with a 55mm. Hence my query. I don't know the difference between a 55mm f/2.8/3.5 Micro and my old Nikon 50mm series E so it's not that obvious to me that it'll be completely useless.

Pressing 'ctrl-f' in internet explorer opens a search field. Type in "HN-3", check "Show only full words" and there are 56 entries in the table...


Perhaps when looking through them, you'll remember which of the lenses, you once used!

I think i used it on a Ai-S 28/2.8 (I might have the chance to verify this if i can borrow my mate's 28mm). I'll also try to find out what the difference between the HR-3 and HR-4 (indicated for the E 50/1.8) is. Else it'll end up on eBay

OK, fair point, and I apologize if you thought my tone was patronizing. (But you didn't give us any clues that you had done some research and had a partial answer.)

As a general point, when considering the suitability of a lens hood for a particular lens, there are two factors to consider: Does it physically fit? And does it provide the correct amount of shade? These days virtually all hoods are bayonet-mount, so they'll only fit lenses for which they're designed. But older designs are screw-in, and obviously they'll fit any lens of the right diameter. If a screw-in hood fits multiple lenses with different focal lengths, as is the case with your HN-3, there will only be one focal length for which it offers the correct amount of shade. When it's fitted to wider lenses, you'll get vignetting. When it's fitted to longer lenses, it will work but it won't be optimised.
