Ok here's the deal. I need something like a 300mm or 400mm fast lens that will work in some form or another on my DSLR.

What are my options, am I right in thinking any old nikon lens will work? Not bothered about AF too much, as at long distances I've got a fair bit of DOF to play with anyway.

Almost forgot to say, don't want to spend more than a grand.

Any help appreciated :)

does it have to be Nikon branded or just nikon fit? I mean for example, would a Sigma 100-300 fit the bill? There is one popped up in the classifieds within your budget, but if you just want something that will fit a nikon then that opens more possibilities as the words 'fast' 'long' and 'nikon' rarely go together in the same sentence as '3 figures' iykwim ;)

Sigma 120 - 400

My brother just picked one up for 800 odd, and it is really good for the price!

Trouble is I'm not convinced they're fast enough. I was thinking of fixed length, assuming it would be better quality. Must confess to not knowing anything about third party lenses though

So are there no old fast Nikon lenses that would work?

Yes there are, Aperture have a 300 f2.8 AF D "User" £1290, Grays have a 300 f2.8 AIS £1095, Dale are another who regularly have the older Nikkor glass, but all they have is an 800mm f5.6 for £2500

And don't forget the good ol' Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 card.....non-DG examples can go for around £1K, if you can find one!

Over on TZ-UK there's a Tokina 300mm f2.8 going for £800.

OMG!! I'm going to be in sooo much trouble if Mrs Treeman finds out, and it's all your fault Martyn. I looked on the Aperture site and they also had a newer AFS ED II for £2500, I've only gone and bloody bought it!!! :bonk:

No worries mate, I can take it .... I had been salting some money aside for a used 500 f4, spoke to the wife around Christmas explained my intentions, "no problem she said, life is too short, it's your money" about a month later I spot that Gray's have reduced the brand new previous version they had to £4700, (mifsuds had a used one at £4500) so I thought I am having that. Ring wife at work, she says fine go for it ... when she gets home she asks how much it was, I tell her, she replies "I though it was only about £450" ... we are still speaking

I see you fixed up I was going to suggest maybe a Tamron 300mm f2.8 MF or a Sigma 500mm f 4.5 They can be had for less than £1k I'm sure you will be blown away with the quality of Nikon though :)
