Right folks I currently do a lot of photography of my dogs Running etc and i'm finding sometimes the lensis slow at autofocussing to capture the shot , i use a Nikkor 55-300mm 4.5 (on a Nikon d90 body)

What lens would you reccommend to improve my shots?
Budget is £500

Do you need 300mm ? Or something shorter and quicker ?

The nikon 70-300 VR is an obvious candidate, much faster af than your current lens.

Otherwise one of the newer sigma or tamarin f/2.8 lenses would be good.

I use my Sigma 70-200 for a lot of my dog pictures, I know you can pick them up reasonably priced 2nd hand. Once you get the hang of them they produce stunning action shots.

For close up / portraits of dogs I use a Tamron 17-55 f2·8

if you can find a SH Nikon 70 or 80-200mm within budget that would be the first place I'd look, the newer sigma is also worth considering. The 70-300 VR is great value for money, but obviously not as fast...

best lens in my bag? the nikon 70-300 vr very very capable lens and really sharp if you stay just short of the 300mm mark hth mike

There are some great Nikon 80-200 F2.8 within your budget. I had one for years, it focuses very fast plus the F2.8 is always a help if you need it. Make sure it's one of the later models and not the old push/pull one and you won't regret it.
