Eveninga all..
Just a quick question.
Looking on Greedy Bay at Nikon 12-24 f4 lenses and i notice the box listed for the lens is Silver/Gray where as all my lens Boxes are Gold coloured !
What am i missing ?

The 12-24 was the first DX specific lens so maybe they planned to make all the DX boxes that colour but then had a rethink...

All my boxes for 12-24 DX lenses are gold. But that doesn't mean @jpw is wrong - perhaps the one you're looking at is a particularly old example?

Nikkor lenses have always been in gold boxes... going right back to the 80s. It's market dependant. The US have different packaging I'm told. It's clearly grey market in origin, but if used, hardly an issue. In fact... even if new, as I'm sure Nikon's lens warranty is world wide (from what I'm told... can't confirm this one way or the other).

A member from the USA on the nikon forum i belong just got a refurbished D7100 and it was in a silver box, just a side note there has been a lot of refurbished D7100 going cheap over there dont know if thats significant regards an update or not.

My Nikkor 12-24mm f/4 came in a silver/grey box (US import)

Refurbished products from Nikon come in clearly marked packaging.
Not always as ive had a refurb body from Cardiff camera centre and a refurb 70-200mm VR1 from their Ebay store and both were in plain boxes with content printed on box but nothing about it being a refurb, you might want to try searching my feedback on here as i probably sold them on here or on Ebay

More i think about it they might have been plain grey/silver rather than white as the white usually signifies a kit lens box

So to recap.
It's either a
Import
Refurb
or
First gen before they got the colour right

If it's a genuine Nikon refurb, it will be in a Nikon Refurb box. Not all refurbished Nikons you can buy are refurbished by Nikon.

Those are just boxes from different markets. The lens boxes with the lens pictures on are common in North America. I remember those from when I lived in Canada.

The only time I've bough a refurb was a genuine Nikon one (as evidenced by paperwork left in the box) and was in exactly the same box as the example I bought as perfect. The only tell tale on the camera itself was a splodge of red paint inside the tripod thread. That was plenty of years ago though!
