I'm looking at an older 300mm f/4 Nikon simply described as "AF" for which I would buy a secondhand DX Body. But which DX bodies will give both AF and metering with such a lens? I speculate that the D300 and D7x00 series would be fine - any others?

Budget is, as they say, constrained.

Compatibility

As a traditional AF lens, the Nikon AF 300mm f/4 works on a broader range of Nikon cameras than any other kind of lens. Except that it won't autofocus on the D40, D40x, or D60 and that you'll have to have an AI coupling prong added to the aperture ring for coupled metering with antediluvian Nikons made from 1959 - 1976, this lens works perfectly with every Nikon ever made since 1977.

See Nikon Lens Compatibility for details on your camera. Read down the "AF, AF-D (screw)" column for this lens.

Unfortunately half way down the page he then contradicts himself by saying that on the D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000,D3300, D3200, D3100, D3000, D60, D40, and the D40x there will be no autofocus with the basic "AF" lens. I hesitate to depend on him.

He's correct that AF-D lenses (of which this particular 300mm is) will autofocus on any of the above cameras (or anything newer like d3400, d3500 etc) as they don't have an auto focus motor for older lenses.

However the AF-S version of this lens would work on these low end DX cameras.
