I know it wont auto focus on my current body but im looking to change that to a new body with built in motor will it focus on one of those ? or would i just be better buying a new 50mm 1.8

It looks like a nikon 50mm 1.8 ai or ais. Both are manual focus lenses regardless of camera. I don't think there are any issues with using it on your camera but can't remember whether you'll get metering or not.

Thankyou, so it may be ok to play with temporary and wait till the new body and get a lens then

Yeah, have a play, but as has been said below, if it is an ai or ais lens, there wouldnt be any metering on a D40

It's a smashing lens. Try this, camera in manual, aperture at f1.8. Look through the viewfinder and change shutter speeds. You'll probably find it only meters wide open. Then alter aperture to your chosen f/stop and compensate the shutter speed, works like that on my D700

thank you for the replies and links, if i put it on the body and turn on it almost shows an error unless i put it into manual. will be ok for pictures where i have the time to set everything up properly i guess

If it is AI or AIS then it will be manual focus and no metering so seperate meter needed or just use sunny F16 rule.

This info is from what i can gather from the links i've given you based on a D40 body

The "bunny ears" on the lens would indicate that it is not pre AI. Pre AI lenses will mount your body but must not be used as damage may occur!!!
