would the nikon 16-85mm vr be a step up from a 18-70mm? main use would be landscape and general walkabout.thank you in advance.

Just my very humble opinion having used most of the DX zooms, but the only one that the 16-85 ISN'T a step up from is the 17-55. I'm sure there will be disagreement ;)

No, I'd agree with that. The only thing I wonder is how much of a step up in IQ it would actually offer for the money. Maybe marginal. It will give a decent chunk more range and VR though. It's a fine lens.
 
A question that I've considered a few times myself, the 18-70 was originally a kit lens with models such as the D70, mine has given tremendous service and taken one or two pretty good shots ;) I'm told the 16-85VR is a quality lens, but it would be good to have some input from 16-85VR users that have migrated from the 18-70, then both reedwarbler and myself would have more to go on...:thumbs:

Hi Garry,

have you thought about a third party 2.8 standard zoom; tokina, sigma and tamron all make some fine zooms that may offer more advantages than the 16-85, apart from reach obviously!
 
What Rapscallion says. I had the same dilema for ages, the 17-55 was too much money for a casual snapper, and I could not bring myself to get the 16-85 due to being slower at the long end. Got the Sigma 17-50 2.8 a week or so back. Haven't been out in the wild yet but after some messing around at home I am liking it so far.

Having said that, there is another thread on here suggesting the Nikon 17-55 can be had for £500-£600 used. I couldn't find one for less than £800 though.
 
Forgot to say, the 16-85 seems to be in very short supply atm, with prices where they are available looking high.

never thought about a third party 2.8,might have to look into that, i was thinking that the 16-85 would cover the range to my 70-300 better than,say a 2.8 that only goes to 50mm,or would this not make much of a difference? i also have a nifty fifty.
 
Can the 16-85 maintain it's aperture through it's zoom range or is it only F3.5 at 16mm? I am in the market for an 85mm lens for portraits but want it to be fast, if this lens can only be f/5.6 at 85mm it isn't what I am looking for. Really struggling to find one of Nikons new 85mm G lenses in stock anywhere at the moment, not sure they have reached the UK yet!
