Yes
Further to my other post i am going to go with Nikon D80 i think and then upgrade to a D300 after xmas.

Is the D80 a good alternative to a Canon 40d?

Also would you say nikon lenses are as good as canons?

here we go again

no comment on the lens ranges... both have stunning lenses... so if you can afford it, your not going to be dissapointed with ether... but as others pointed out....the d80 is a step down from the d200? but you said you wanted better than the d200?

Well my d200 must be broken then as i have just had a hold of a d80 and its af was way faster than my d200?

Both brands produce lens with the quality you would expect and want, but from a non-biased view (honestly), the majority of nikon lens are better than the canon comparisons. BUT, they are almost all generally more expensive.

were they both using the same lens?/ the same sort of light... there are lots of other features to the af aswell as the body

There's more choice with Canon......

Good point, the range is much larger with Canon, but that also brings up the argument of why thats maybe the reason the lens Nikon do have, are better than the Canon equivalents

I've heard that argument before!

Just wish I were rich enough to prove the theory :D

I reckon it must be... Flash In The Pan can supply you with contact details for your nearest Nikon service centre...

There are some KILLER lenses from both companies. Both also have certain ranges/types that they specialise in. Canon do some cracking very fast primes and some top notch long zoom lenses. Nikon specialise in other areas. They both have a nifty fifty but my second favourite lens the AFS 105mm f/2.8 vr would be a lens lots of Canon owners would like to be able to use!

We often give the advice to new users that they should go into a shop and try out both or more like all of the manufacturers cameras but in reality they should also consider what they are going to want to do next and then after that. Once you make the decision it can be expensive to swap companies!
The AFS 105mm f/2.8 vr was a big part of my decision to go Nikon rather than Canon in the first place but I would love one of their f1.2 primes.

 And what does he know?!!
Maybe he counted the lenses that each company offer. According to Camera Price Buster, Canon currently offer 66 and Nikon 55.

But it's a bit of a sterile debate, really.

Both companies make some brilliant lenses and both make some so-so ones.

Thre are some areas where Canon's larger range does offer extra choices: £1000 telephotos, 70-200 zooms, and ultra-wide primes, for example. But these may or may not be relevant to any given individual.

Both companies make some lenses which are far superior to anything the other has. Nikon's 14-24 and Canon's 100-400 spring to mind.

would you say nikon lenses are as good as canons?
Bottom line: Some are better, some are comparable, some are worse. it depends what you want to photograph, which you haven't told us.

I want to photography aircraft mainly with some portraiture
If you've got £1000 to spend on a lens for aircraft, Canon's 100-400L is miles ahead of anything Nikon offer.

For portraits, there's no clear winner in the lens stakes, but many people say Nikon's flash system is easier to control than Canon's.

No - which ones you can get used for that money....my 35-70f2.8AFD for instance.

Top line pro lens, until the 28-70 AFS came out to replace it, subsequently replaced by the 24-70.

Just seen this and Andy/ Dave I know nothing about Nikon glass you pair of devils, leave me out of this debate
