Nikon lens says Af on box but there is no af / m setting on lens

bought a new lens today a 70-300 F4-5.6g af zoom it is a nikon / nikkor lens

when i opened the box it has no af/m switch on it and will not auto focus at all

it is going on a d3100 any ideas on why this won't auto focus please

sorry bit new to nikon scene i have always been a canon person
 
Unlike Canon EOS which has the focus motor in the body, the Nikon can either had the motor in the body of the camera or the lens. The D3100 doesn't have a focus motor in the body, so won't AF with lenses that need this system.
 
This lens will not autofocus on your camera as it doesn't have a focus motor - you need afs lenses ( possibly also afg).

That's somewhat misleading. It's a 'G' lens so has a built-in motor and should work properly with Alex's D3100.
Alex, is this the only lens you have? Do you know if the camera will auto-focus with other lenses?
It's possible the camera is set to manual focus. If you have the manual, have a look page38 as this describes switching between AF and MF. I would set it to AF-S to start with and see what happens.

The G in a lens means gelded and ONLY refers to the fact the lens has no aperture ring so the camera does all the work re aperture and metering, AF-S lenses have inbuilt motors
 
I believe it will be the AF-D version and won't work on the D3100. G means it lacks the aperture ring so won't work properly on MF cameras afaik.

The AF-D was f4-5.6, the newer AF-S version which is about 3-4 times the cost starts at f4.5 iirc.

I thought there weren't any mainstream G lenses that weren't also AF-S so it looks like I'm wrong and Alex has bought a lens that won't AF with his camera.
