Thinking about this for a while! My main photographic aim is Landscapes I love it but I also like getting out there with the Wildlife.

My current kit is as follows

Nikon d750
Nikon 16-35 f4
Nikon 24-120 f4
Nikon 80-400 AFS
Nikon 50 f1.8

I will be adding very soon
Nikon d7200 (Wildlife body or if possible the D400 if and when)
Nikon 20 f1.8 (Some Landscape although it might be hard for it to replace the 16-35 but will definitely take over for night / Astro.)

At the moment I always seems to lug around all my kit as I know its possible to get good shots with the 80-400 but I'm thinking when I get the D7200 the 80-400 will be attached to that body 99% of the time which will free up space and weight in my bag. I've then thought to fill that redundant space id be better getting the smaller lighter 70-300vr. I might be wrong but I'm feeling the Nikon 16-35 and 70-300 would about cover a lot of focal length for not a lot of weight. If that was to be a good decision I could then maybe sell the 80-400 and get the 200-500 as its rare when out with wildlife I'm at anything less then 300mm.

The reason for this starting now is I've just about recovered from my back operation and slowly getting back to fitness in the gym and also my aim is to get up some of the fells in the Lakes over the next 12 months so I'm trying to get prepared over the winter.

I had thought about re-shuffling completely and trying to go down the 24-70 and 70-200 route but I think size and weight would increase massively so based on this being out of the question what do you guys think?

I have a 16-35 and 70-200 with my D750 and for landscapes covers everything I need to do. The bit in the middle always seems so meh to me - I have a tamron 28-75 which I've used for 4 shots between 35-70 in the last 18 months, so I now don't take it unless I know I'll need it.

Thanks for the reply! I agree and id love the 70-200 but its just not in my price range so the next one down the 70-300 which is still a pretty dam good lens I think would fill that gap just nicely!

I thought id get away with the 24-120 but Its just not long enough I find if I take that and the 16-35 ill make do with the 16-35 then if I need to change seem to run out at 120.

I have a 70-300 as well (girlfriends) and it's OK but not great on the way to 300 which makes it a touch pointless. Maybe try the Tamron VC version which is better at 300 I've been told.

I just got a 70-200 f/4 for £675 (brand new UK stock) so not overly expensive compared to the f/2.8.
