Hi all,

My sister in law has asked me to recommend a lens to buy her hubby for Xmas.

I have a canon so have little clue about Nikon lens so please help.

I'll update the model no. later but I know it's a crop body & the budget is small.

I've spoken to her about secon hand from this forum which she's happy with so I'm now looking for guidance please.

He has hinted on buying a 70-300 (I think) which was around £300 so you have a budget of around £200-£300 at the moment.

General interests are his children, target shooting, etc, he's a total novice (just like me :))

Please can you advice me of any options, new or second hand to start with

Many thanks in advance

For the D3100, he'll need an AF-S Nikkor, HSM Sigma or similar with the AF motor in the lens. Of the 70-300s available, the Nikkor VR is the best of the bunch but unless you can find one second hand will probably be a bit over the budget. You might also find something like the Tamron 18-270 2nd hand for the money and that'll give him reasonable results in a single lens.

the already mentioned tamron is a good all rounder, you may be able to get the vr version for the budget used
or:-
nikon 35mm 1.8g is a great 'cheapie'
nikon 50mm 1.8g
nikon 70 300 vr
tamron 70 300 vc

The tamron 70 300 vc has a very good reputation, but you may be able to pick up a used nikon 70-300 vr for similar money. The tamron is not often seen second hand as it is quite new.

The 55-200vr and 55-300vr are smaller and cheaper than the above lenses.
