Yes
I have been looking at at geeting either a 300mm or 400mm prime lens and really need to know if its worth spending £000's more on nikon lenses or are the sigma ones just as good for half the money.I already have the sigma 70-200 f2.8 and think its great but before i spend upwards of £2500 would like some opinions.

YES!

I do have a couple of Sigma lenses - but mostly I'd rather have Nikon - the Sigmas that I have don't have an equivalent from Nikon.

+1

You also have an issue with Sigma lenses in their sample variability (i.e. quite a few lemons leave the factory) - not impossible with Nikon, but less of an issue.

All photographic kit is about the law of diminishing returns... eg twice the price, 10% better.

However, this is true in all forms of technology (cars, computers, tools, firearms etc).

All you can answer for yourself is "is it good enough for me or do I want the very best". The answer to that is normally derived from whats in your wallet more than anything else.

Spot on...........

All three of mine are fine.Though I am finding the self restraint difficult where the Nikon 600 F4 is concerned...........
