I have just been told Nikon lenses are not weather sealed is this true??

I am off to the Malaysian Rainforest on Thursday for a couple of weeks and I am hoping my Nikon kit will be up for the challenge.

What are you taking?

Some lenses and some cameras are but to keep cost down the lower end stuff isn't. Something like a D200/D300/D300s/D3/D700 are whilst things like D40/D40x/D60 etc are not. As for lenses again we would have to know.

this is what i recieved from nikon europe.

Dear scott,

Thank you for contacting Nikon regarding lenses.

All of our range of lenses are weather sealed and can be used in light rain. Some of the lenses - which are listed below - have a rubber mount seal for extra protection, however.
If you have any further queries regarding this matter, please click the link above to update your question.

14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S NIKKOR
24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S NIKKOR
AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II
200mm f/2G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR
AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.4G ED
600mm f/4G ED VR AF-S NIKKOR (no rubber mount seal but excellent dust and water resistance)
500mm f/4G ED VR AF-S NIKKOR (no rubber mount seal but excellent dust and water resistance)

Kind Regards,

well you will need a bag for the camera to keep it dry, so might aswell get one that will cover the whole lot.

The humidity will be high too so just having it in a bag, although it will help, is unlikely to be enough.

Or I could always hope the sun shines constant for the next two and a half weeks!..:)

I have a bag to keep the kit dry and I probably wouldn't try shooting in torrential rain anyway unless I was under some cover.

I did expect a level of weatherproofing and it seems that is what I have. The camera has been soaked before whist shooting at rally's and performed fine. I think my biggest worry will be the humidity.

you will need to be careful if you store the camera equipment in an air conditioned room and then go outside.

I have contacted a local photographer who works out there and he says I will be fine with the kit and protection I have got.

Phew!

All Nikon 'Pro' kit is fine - I've used it in Malawi, Zimbabwe and Botswana during the African rainy season and in Belize in torrential rain with no problems...
I've even dropped cameras and lenses into rivers by accident and they worked fine after being dried-off and left to air-out for 24 hours... though I wouldn't like to make a habit of doing this!!!
