Could someone please give me a simple explanation to the Nikon lens range?

Basically I have a Canon and want to go FF but am not convinced by the 6D and the 5D3 is too expensive for me so I'm toying with the D600. However, I don't know anything about Nikon glass. Do they have a red ring "L" equivalent? Will any lens fit? etc.

Thanks in advance.

Nikon make crop and full frame lenses.

Crop lenses have a DX in the name and FF don't. Unlike Canon the DX lenses will physically fit on a FF body and the body will just go into cropped mode.

There isn't really an equivalent L designation although they do have "pro" lenses which have a gold ring (as opposed to Canon's L red), typically they are constant f/2.8 zooms or fast (and expensive) primes, although there are exceptions.

The only glaring omission from the Nikon FF line up is a f/4 70-200 but there are some good cheap older versions pf the f/2.8 version that tend to be as good optically but not so good in AF and use of TC's.

Price is a good indication as well.

The 28-105D AF f3.5/f4.5 used is around £100 - £150, and amazing value for money considering the results it can produce.

There are also some cheap gems out there, if you do not mind manual focus some of the Ai or AiS lenses are superb.
