Nikon/Mac question

I've just bought myself a D7000 (courtesy of the good people at Digital Depot), replacing my ancient D70.

My intention is to use iPhoto/Aperture 3 to manage the photo's and edit/process. My wife wants to access my pictures too as a lot of them will be of our children so hence iPhoto as it's just much more user friendly for viewing/sharing pictures.

When I conect my D7000 up it doesn't appear as a Device in the menu on Finder ? Is that normal? my D70 did ?

If I already have iPhoto running it doesn't detect that I have connected my D7000 but if it isn't running it automatically launches when I connect the camera. Again with the D70 this wasn't an issue.

Not huge issues but wondered if this was normal ?

Seems particularly strage is doesn't appear as a Device on Finder

Running iPhoto 11, Aperture 3 and latest OSX. Happens on both my iMac and MBP.

Are there different modes on the d7000 eg pictbridge, usb? Choose another and see if it makes any difference.
 
Have you got the latest Nikon software installed?

It may just need a driver, although I have the D90 I couldn't find anything in the menus to do with usb mass storage, pictbridge ect

Will have to check the D7000 to see what modes it has.

I have the Nikon software on my iMac but not on my MPB. Problem is the same.

Should the LCD screen on the D7000 change to PC like it did on my D70? There is nothing on my D7000 to indicate it is connected to my computer other than the green flashing light on the rear.
 
The D7000 does have PictBridge but that seems to be a mode the camera automatically selects when connected to a printer?
 
You need to set your camera to mass storage device in the menu. Then when you plug it in via USB it'll appear in finder and on the desktop as a removeable disk

Seems like there is no setting for Mass Storage Device on the D7000 and this is normal.

I bet it's Nikon trying to get you to load their software or something like that.
Can't think why else this would be ? It made me load it as I couldn't get iPhoto to work at first. Devious buggers!
 
Thats weird/annoying. Photo software tends to be pretty painful I've found, manually organizing files is much better. Not a fan of iPhoto either, make sure you haven't got the duplication feature switched on. It'll copy every photo in your iPhoto library to it's own folder, doubling the space it uses on the HD. Sorry bit off topic there!

There isn's a simple and full menu option is there? Never used a D7000 so not sure but thats a last resort. How about trying a card reader?
 
Card reader works fine. SDHC card shows up as a drive called D7000.

I am sure this is Nikon trying to play silly buggers.

iPhoto has it's drawbacks but it works well with Aperture....and with Aperture 3 being so cheap now I was not about to consider anything else.
 
Have you checked to see if Aperture supports the D7000 yet & have you got all the latest updates. If I recall it had an update download recently
