Nikon Macro lens for FX

Heard the 105 vr is good on the d800, I'm sure someone will post about it soon enough that has more experience with the combo. Zeiss 100 looks amazing but pricey.

I'm using the 105mm and it's excellent. I hear the 200mm f/4 micro is about as sharp as you can get, but never used it personally.
 
Best is probably the 200mm f4 but I'm happy with my 55mm 2.8, an incredibly sharp lens.
 
I have the 105 and its very sharp. I love it because not only that I use it for macro work but it also work nice for portraits. VR comes handy as well
 
When I used the 105 on my D90 I thought it was a little too tight for indoor portraits, but of course on FX it is much better. DXO mark have it right at the top of their lens ratings, when paired with a D4. It'll be just as high, if not better, on a D800.
 
Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G ED IF AF-S VR One of the sharpest lenses you can get.
 
So I am swithering between the 105 VR and the 200 f4.............its early days lets see if anyone else has a say in this.
I wont be back on dry land for another 8 days so there is time
 
Don't discount the sigma 150mm

I found it much better than the Nikon 105, both for sharpness and working distance.

it heavy for my liking. I prefer to hand hold for macro. Gives more freedom. And that beast would get tiring quick I imagine.

Actually never mind on the weight, I mis read and thought the reviewer said 3.5KG at the end! :D now, that would be heavy. He said 3.5 pounds, which is only 1.5KG. The 70-200 is bout that.

Recently bought myself a Nikkor 105 VR Micro to replace a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro. Not used it much yet - I thought I would be more housebound after my op than I have been, so not stayed in much to play! First impressions are that it's certainly an upgrade from The Tamron (which, in itself is no slouch in terms of performance if you're on a tight budget) and if I want to get really close up, I have a microscope with a small, relatively low resolution camera attachment.
 
I have the 105 nikon,it is a lovely lens but if I was in you shoes and had your kit I would go for the zeiss 100 macro, what an awesome lens, and only thing is its manual. Focus,. But for macro that's no issue with the go look at at one.

sigma 105, 150 or 180mm
Tamron 90mm

Plus tubes...?

The 105 is good, but for more working distance, see about hiring a 150 or 180 to test?
Or hire one of each for a weekend? Think they are all around the 400-600ukp price range...

Post up which you decide on.
 
I've heard the 60mm f2.8 is a better macro lens and that is the one I intend to buy. Improve the magnification if required with extension tubes.
 
The 60mm is great, and very useful for portraits too. I had the old 2.8D version, tack sharp. But, you have to get in pretty close to fill the frame with say, a bug on a leaf. The 105mm, IMHO, is sharper again, and allows you more distance from the subject while still filling the frame. It's a bit tight for indoor portraits on DX, but fine on FX. Outdoor, it's hard to beat. The longer ones may well do, but you really have to be well into macro and shoot a lot to warrant buying one I think.

I took the pic below this afternoon with the 200mm f4 Micro Nikkor. It is straight out of the camera with no subsequent sharpening, only a little cropping.

Heavy lens, not the easiest to hand hold and the auto focus is not fast. If you are into shooting bugs it does let you stand back a bit though.

The Nikon 105mm VR works with the TC's too which is a bonus I didn't realise until I had it and someone on hear posted!

I have used mine with extension tubes and tc's. Still awesome quality

I have the 2.0 version 2 extender already so maybe that will be the best way for me to go, save some $$$ and have the best of both worlds (105 and 210mm):D:D

It is a 1:1 macros lens. If you put a 2xTC on it maintains the same minimum focus distance whilst doubling the focal length so your reproduction ratio would become 2:1. Erm, I think. :)
