With my E-420 I downloaded a codec that made ORF files viewable as images in windows photo gallery etc, is there a similar codec available for Nikon's NEF files?

Try this, it's for "Preinstalled versions of Windows Vista 32-bit Home Basic / Home Premium / Business / Enterprise / Ultimate editions (Service Pack 1) or Windows XP Home Edition / Professional (Service Pack 3)" Mac users get what Apple give them I presume as there is no trace of a similar thing for macs.
