I'm guessing you are talking about the older D vr model not the newer G vr model that they are selling for £1800. The link you posted took me to main page and nog to a product. The newer model for £417.95 would be crazy!

From the photos I've seen posted on the Nikon UK Photography group on FB it is indeed the older version.

Still a great price considering new in other UK shops is £939. Jessops were selling it at £699 in October so I'm guessing selling off the older stock.

The (old) lens always got mixed press ... but at that price even if it is a little "off" IQ wise .......... I'm not sure that you would really notice it in most of your shots in all but poor conditions

That's a great price. I hate the old 80-400 with a passion but that's really because of the ergonomics. The image quality is quite acceptable and that's a lot of lens for the money.
