Nikon non ' D' lenses

I've been looking at two lenses (s/h), both the Nikkor 180mm F2.8 and the 85mm F1.8, seems without the 'D' suffix the distance chip isn't present which can cause issues with not just TTL flash but also some metering modes? :thinking:

Has anybody had either/both of these lenses and experienced any issues with either day to day shooting or when using TTL flash?

Obviously the simple answer is root out a 'D' version but a fair few of the 180's especially are the non D version.....

Wow......that's a super portrait! I doubt i'd use it much for TTL flash as i'm awaiting a Smartflash and acc's as we speak, just interested if anyone had issues either way? Thanks for the input :thumbs:

No.........that's a point! :D, i'm sure i'd read it could cause issues with one of the metering modes, can't remember which but iirc it was matrix? It looks like i'm looking for problems that may well not exist :cuckoo:

I think the introduction of the AF-D lenses was to increase precision of TTL exposure when using flash. There is nothing wrong with non-D lenses with flash, it's just that there have been improvements to just fine-tune just how 'perfect' the camera communicates with the flash using distance info.

The 85mm non-D is a good buy actually and when they do come up, they are pretty cheap. I bought mine for less than £150 - it just had a few light marks on the body casing, not bad for a lens that's going on 20 years+. I think some people get put off by the non-D status but especially if you use studio/non-TTL flash (and maybe manual focus) then I doubt you'll see any issues at all.

My 85mm had a 'look' to it when used in natural light that I haven't seen on my other lenses. Very neutral contrast and a slightly warm look. The contrast levels were actually a bit off-putting at the start because I thought I'd bought a duffer, simply because none of my other lenses had this characteristic. The good thing about this, i found in the en d, was it gave you options to increase the contrast in PP if needed, or keep it as it was, making it a very versatile piece of kit. Wish I hadn't sold mine now....

Sounds interesting.....I am looking at a few of the non D versions and for what I envisage using it for/what you say it seems ideal.
