Hi,

I am new to this site and heard lots of good things about its users so here I am needing some help choosing.

I have a budget of about £2200 and need to get a body and a lens(s).
I am by no means a pro, but I like good quality gear, I do mainly street and portraits and wedding potography

So which one do you think is the best option to get:

Nikon D300s + 16-85 f3.5-f5.6+ 50mm f1.8 + 85mm f1.8

or

Nikon D700 + Tamron 28-75 f2.8

Image quality is very important to me, I am not sure about the Tammy as i have never used one before.

Thanks guys for all your help.

D700, Sigma 24-70 f/2.8, Nikkor 50 f/1.8 and 85 f/1.8. You may need to hunt for the lenses 2nd hand but I think you should be able to get that kit with your budget. IMO, the high ISO capabilities of the D700 make it the body for you.

I'd get the D700 over the d300s purely because you mention wedding photography, the high iso performance of a full frame being the reason.

Thanks guys
well the wedding stuff I do is not really frequent ive done one for a friend and have another friends wedding coming up in june next year. but they are all favours and not making money out of them also i have got a deal on the d300s and 16-85 mm for £1500, which i think its a good deal.
the only reason I'm not very sure about the D700 is because of the 3rd party lens option i have.

D700 plus used Nikkor 35-70 f2.8 D. (Should be £350 ish used)

If you go with the D300 the 17-55 f2.8 would be my choice for wedding stuff, (easy to pick up a good one used).

Thanks guys

The 16-85 is one of the best "kit" lenses that Nikon make http://www.photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/377-nikkor_1685_3556vr
but I would go for wide aperture every time for weddings / portraits.

As well as the photographer's eye, the main thing that sets a pro's wedding pictures apart from the family "snaps" is the bokeh. The 16-85 won't give you that, compared to the 2.8 lenses you are considering. The full frame sensor will also add to the depth of the picture over the crop sensor and allow you to get all of the guests in the shot in tight spaces.

Well the Tamron is worrying me, not sure about the IQ and AF, and to be honest I dont think i can get Nikon pro glasses because of their price and the weight for my street work, too heavy.
and with the D300s I dont like the 17-55 I think its too much money, even 2nd hand, so that is out of the guestion and the 16-85 is sharp but slow at the long end.

They are really making it difficult for us to choose.

if anyone has used the Tamron on a D700 please let me know of your opinion, i tried a lot of review sites but they are all full of mixed messages.

Wish Nikon had the Canon equivalent of 25-105 L f4. Cheap and great.

Wish Nikon had the Canon equivalent of 24-105 L f4. Cheap and great.

28-105 f3.5 - f4.5 D (IF) around £150 used (no longer available new) cheap and great lens for the money.

At £800 I would not class the Canon as cheap.

The 35-70 f2.8 should be no more than £350 used, great sharp lens

Not cheap but if you buy it as a kit with the 5D MK2 you get the kit for £2299 and that makes it fairly cheap.

Why not buy the Canon kit then, its close to your budget and you will get the lens you want together with a nice full frame body

If it is either of the Nikon bodies that you really want, the 28-105 Nikkor is great value for money, and is nice and light. If you do not mind a bit more weight the image quality from the 35-70 f2.8 is superb, and again at around £350 a bargain for what you get.

You may be better with a small prime for the street stuff, 24mm f2.8 or 35mm f2.

f2.

A few reasons actually, I have a few Sb-600s and the Canon doesnt have built in flash which can be usefull sometimes when you dont want to carry a big flash gun with you, the Nikon CLS which the 5D MK2 doesnt have, I think!, The Af on the Nikon is much better and most importantly I'm a Nikon man ;)

Fair enough, seriously the 28-105 is a gem of a lens, but the 35-70 f2.8 is a great "people" lens.

Mifsuds and ffordes had quite a few in recently ... just checked and neither list any ... typical.

London Camera Exchange may be worth a try, or ring Aperture they are not listing any but worth a call. Not sure of any other London stores that do used, would have thought there would be a few.
