Nikon price rise should I let it affect me

I had been very very seriously looking into a D4 body after selling off all my Canon gear for a move to Nikon. As the last bit's of money were coming through a couple of weeks ago I wasn't quite in a position to pre-order one. I went to Istanbul last week thinking I would put in an order the first day I got back which was Monday 26th. To my horror I say the price had shot up. To say I am livid is an understatement. :bat:

Now should I let this put me off a move over to Nikon? I have to say I am very disappointed with them and their bull****** excuses for the "error". On the other hand their camera are just so appealing.

On a side note I am actually quite tempted to get a D800 instead and add a used D3s. Total price would be around the same as a D4 body I think.
 
These bodies are way beyond my reach, so this is pretty hypothetical, but you made the decision to switch to Nikon and I don't suppose any of your reasons have changed. Going back to Canon is going to be expensive too, and you'll just be spending a lot of money to buy back into a system that wasn't giving you what you wanted. Your anger is understandable, but Nikon won't care one way or the other, and you won't be 'punishing' them by changing your mind.

If you really need, or want, a D4 I'd just put this aside, bite the bullet, and buy one. Alternatively, buy a used D3s and see how you get on with it. You were only planning to get one Nikon body, so leave the D800 for now. They're probably not going to go up any more, and may well come down a bit once the supply stabilises.
 
I was selling off all my Canon equipment this month and moving over to Nikon as well, but have now decided to stick with Canon and move directly to medium format instead.

I'll take a miss on Nikon. This is my first experience of them, and no matter how good their equipment is, they were an expensive option anyway, and problems this early into the relationship spells trouble.

I spent 600 quid this month buying my way out of my Vodafone contact and moving over to Orange, because while I was in the states and unable to receive calls, they charged me £4 to cal the customer service department in the UK to find out why.

I decided I'm doing this every single time I have a problem with a company from now on. Voting with my feet and my wallet, and moving on.

How is buying your way out of a contract voting with your wallet? You've just paid the remaining line rental/call package on your contract so Vodafone now have their money from you :shrug:

To the OP...annoying as it is, I think you would be best off sticking with your decision and move over to Nikon as planned. Otherwise, you'll only end up buying back into Canon which will probably annoy you even more considering you've just sold your Canon gear!

I shoot Canon and I've got a very close friend who shoots Nikon and to be honest I can't work out what you couldn't get the Canon to do that the Nikon does so well it would make you sell up and change brands in the first place. I've swapped cameras for a day on and off with my mate, but there's nothing I can shoot with his Nikon that I can't shoot with my Canon. I've just sold my 5D2 and 7D and ordered a 5D3 instead, but I'm still waiting for delivery so I can't comment on it yet.

Mostly sports. However for mainly for my own interest I do shoot a lot of travel and doc stuff. In other words both ends of the spectrum in terms of which camera is best. :D
As a separate venture I shoot aviation videos and getting a DSLR with full HD video to complement my current camcorder is a must. That's kind of the reason a D3s on it's own wouldn't really cut it but if I added a D800 then that could be the video part of the deal. ;)
 
Hi Andy, to my mind and i shoot mainly sports, d3S with a D800 as second body would cover all bases, the D4 simply hasnt got anything which would make me sell my D3S and spens another 2k on hd video which i wont use.

i have a D3S and D700 and any potential upgrade would see a trade up from D700 to D800

That's exactly my thinking Gary. I would rather have the two bodies then just one D4 for back up and also that they cover slightly different areas so complement each other well.

Vodafone have their money to complete the contract. They don't have my repeat custom, nor do they have the extra £50-60 in charges that I used to accrue every month. They also have an ex-customer who will positively decline to recommend them to anyone else.

I'm down just over 500, Vodafone are down what would've been probably years and years of repeat custom.

I'm now saving 50 quid a month on my bill after switching, so I'll have clawed my money back by the end of the year.

There's only one loser at the end of the agreement.
