What would be the best prime lens for DX cameras, particularly the D5100? I am looking at the 50mm and the 35mm .
What do you all think is the "must have" prime lens for a DX camera?
Thank you very much inadvance for your advice!:):):):):)

my advice would be go to a shop and try them both, reason being everyone raves about the 50mm and so i wanted one. I went to the shop to try and buy and the sales person talked to me and advised to try the 35mm. It seemed to fit my needs more and i bought it and its the lens that is neve off the camera body.

Try and them both and see which will fit you better

Not sure about the DX camera, but i have a 50mm Prime for my Olympus E-520 and i absolutely love it, and at around £25 for a second hand manual focus lens it's a bloody bargain too

It is the main reason i have come on here actually as before buying the 50mm i was pretty much just shooting in Auto mode all the time, the 50mm has forced me to actually use my camera properly (although i still have a hell of a lot to learn) and i have become much more creative because of it

The best prime is the one that has the focal length that suits YOUR style best.

We can't tell you what that is.

Both the lenses are good.

Welcome to TP as well.:)

That's an easy one. It terms of all round usability the Nikon 35mm f1.8 is easily the best bang for buck lens you can get for DX.

The 50mm is very similar, but more suited to portraits etc, and a bit tight for general use. You could probably pick up both the 35mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.8 afs for under £350. Both are great lenses.
