Can anyone tell me what the differences are between these flashes? Would they be any good for strobist off camera work?
 
Iirc the DX means that model would work with the early ttl system on the first of the digital Nikons. For strobist stuff I don't think it matters one way or t'other which one you get.

Thats my understanding as well.

As far as being suitable for strobist work, as long as you can manually adjust the power, I guess any flash is suitable.
