I have a Nikon SB600 and Nikon D7000. I can get them to work ok wireless when the inbuilt flash goes off as well as the SB600. I have read that it will do the same without the inbuilt flash going off. I have gone into the camera menu and tried to set built in flash to -- in mode, this i can do; but it will not let me set the comp. opposite it to -- only 1/128. Can it be done; if so what am I doing wrong. Or do I need to buy an actual transmitter and receiver to use the SB600 on its own, without the inbuilt flash going off. Any replies much appreciated. Dave.

The inbuilt flash has to fire to trigger the off camera flash, from memory it is at a reduced output, there is also an attachment that fits the hotshoe and screens the flash HERE

Plus the inbuilt flash has no effect to exposure when used as a comander. IIRC it uses preflash to trigger not the main flash so again makes no effect on exposure.
 
The preflash from the onboard flash and the actual flash from the SB600 are so quick, they look like one flash but that's not the case; there is a rain of through that the preflash will add to the exposure on some occasions (which the SG-2 shield should deal with) but on the whole it's a pretty reliable system :)
 
Try taking a picture in the mirror to see if the pre-flash is actually affecting the exact time period of the exposure. I'm impressed Nikon is charging a tenner for that! I'm sure a few minutes with a bit of sculpted plastic packaging could get you something similar, maybe even something that is like a Sto-fen Omnibounce but to block light rather than diffuse it?
 
Thank you all for your help. I have picked up one of the hotshoe shields quite cheap on Ebay. Just waiting for it to come.Regards to you all Dave.
