Nikon - Sigma 30mm f1.4 or Nikon 35mm f1.8

Ok decisions.

I have a vivitar 28mm f2.5 manual. And although I like it a lot, I'm missing more shots than is good - I know, you say I should take four shots through the focus blinking light range.. one may be where you want it.. :lol:

The subject, I mean other half, however doesn't like waiting whilst I attempt to get it right with a frozen smile... So I'm looking at the equivalent range in the title.

Scrounging through ebay, I find an 30mm sigma, looking pretty much new for 250 (or best offer) or new at 300...

Now the nikon 35mm f1.8 also appeals, mainly due to price being new in jessops (online I think) for 170. But... Is it really worth it.

A you tube vid says yeah but no but yeah... The nikon coming in handy with colour punch but losing out on bokeh (which I would like) where as there were a few focussing problems and lovely bokeh on the siggy.

I have a 50mm f1.4d but I (personally) find its a bit tight to the subjects.

I did have a sigma around a year ago, but it needed its focussing tweaked and had to go back.


Over to those who have these, would you go for the sigma or the nikon. Or just stick with what I've got (see signature and flickr links)..?
 
I use the 35mm Nikkor on my D7000 and love it - its gets much more use than any other lens I've got. Bokeh is very good provided you are stopped down one notch from wide open. Overall the lens is very sharp and takes excellent photos for the money.

No experience of the Sigma but you won't be unhappy with the little Nikkor.

I'll try to dig one out at home this eve and link it if I get home at a reasonble time - not sure if I have any at f1.8 but one stop down I might be able to find.
 
I was wondering about these two lenses too. Had thought of getting the Nikkor but was wondering if the extra for the Sigma was worth it.
 
I'd say it's not worth the extra for the sigma. The sigma is a bit bigger in size and an extra hundred more expensive. For performance, I've shot and looked at pictures of my mates sigma on his canon. I have the nikon. The sigma gets a little more DoF isolation because of the extra half stop, but sharpness is a toss up between them in real pictures. Both focus as fast and as silent.

I'd either save the extra cash and get the nikon, or get the nikon and also get the nikon 50/1.8 while you're at it.

Sorry that may have been directed partly at me, (sorry for sharing your thread but it was something I'd been considering too so made sense to post here rather than start another thread) the 50mm f1.8 is a great starter lens, I got a s/h one from a friend for £50 and have had a lot of fun with it. But as you say sometimes 50mm is a bit tight.

I agree. I also have the D7000 & use my 35mm more than my 50mm.
Quality is cystal! :)
