I have this version of the Nikon lens,

It is a great lens and I am very pleased with it. The build quality is also very good.

If it's a budget issue get either the 80-200 AF-S or an 80-200 AF-D. Optically they are near enough identical to the 70-200 VR and, as Iain says, the build quality is very good, far better than either of the others.

I've recently (last week!) bought the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 II and can totally recommend it.. especially at roughly a 1/3rd of the price of the Nikon.
Build quality is excellent, fast focusing, has a 'macro' feature (very usable close focus).. produces nice bokeh wide open etc.. I'll be using it in anger at some gigs towards the end of the month, taking some band portraits etc.. I might even be brave enough to post some on here for C&C..
Obviously, like most things, it depends on your budget. Of course the Nikon will be best, I'd expect so for the price.

I too have the sigma, albeit canon fit and I can second this, it's a beautiful lens, lovely iq, very solidly built and super fast AF. Brilliant bang for buck lens!

Had the Sigma 70-200 and have both the Nikon 80-200 AF-D and the 70-200 VR.
Siggy was well made and optically good, although mine needed recalibrating for a back-focussing issue. Once that was sorted under warranty it was fine, but that was enough for me to switch to the 80-200.
The 80-200 is a brilliant lens; superb optics and the build quality is first rate. Needs an in-body motor for AF but was speedy on my D2x. For the £700 I paid it was a bargain.
Have moved on to the 70-200 VR, only for a little extra reach and the VR function. Slight optical improvement over the 80-200 and the AF-S motor is also a bit faster (not by much) and a lot quieter. Just got mine used for £920 off TP, good price I thought.
All three are good lenses but TBH, if the budget isn't an issue, the 70-200 VR is the best

had a siggy 70-200mm and it was very nice and sharp wide open, now have a nikon 70-200mm and man its so sharp and worth the extra money.

Have the nikon 70-200 VR 1 and there is no comparison to the tamaron or sigma versions.

Having owned all three 70-200s I would Say that in the Nikon wins hands down
the tamron is great optically but the AF speed lets it down, the sigma has the AF speed isn'y optically as good as the others, the Nikon has both, optically brilliant with speed to match
