Nikon "Sleeper lenes"

May have been asked before but hay..............

What NIkon (rather than sigma or Tamron etc) lens are there for say a D700.
Really interested in AF-D lenes, the sort of thing that may be 10-15 years old but great value for money second hand?
 
The Nikon 60mm 2.8D macro is a little cracker. It's useful for portraiture, and of course macro too. It's one of the sharpest lenses Nikon produced, or so I read. I had one in the past but sold it on to get the 105mm [which is a lot more expensive, and I do think that 60mm was sharper!]

When I bought mine, used, I got it for a steal at €250 [Just under £220 currently] - if you can find a good copy for same, snap it up.
 
Don't rule out the 50mm 1.8D. Best value out there.

Manual focus ? 35mm f2 ai. Found mine for around £100, cracking lens.
 
They're probably getting a bit rare now (not in collector's terms but people seem to hang onto them to use) but the pre D 50mm f/1.8 AF is fantastic! A while back, I was contemplating an upgrade to the latest f/1.4 50mm but was advised against it unless I wanted the extra 1/3rd or so stop and ultra shallow DoF. Not so much use to entry level body users (although the focus throw is longer than many so MF is easier than the more modern variants) since it's screw driven but it's plenty fast enough!

I hated this lens. The results were fine, but using it .. so noisey and sluggish. I had a 30yr old minolta 50mm for my Sony that was more fun to use. I think the new 50mm G is about the cheapest brand new lens you can get too, so the older ones are not that great a find.
 
The 35-70 2.8 AF/AFD is pretty damn good for the money.

Some cracking manual primes about as well but most are solid money these days. Charity shops and car boot sales are probably the best bet for real bargains.

Agree with this. Had one for years, it is almost welded on the front of one of my bodies
 
28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G - cheap (as in <£30) and made of plastic so weighs nothing, but the results are pretty damn good, not what you'd expect for the money. I mean, a full-frame standard zoom for £30?!?

Also the 55mm f/2.8 Micro AF - very rare but ridiculously sharp, similar to the 60mm 2.8D but half the price (if you can find one)
