Hi All,

Dose anyone know if there is much difference between the Nikon SB 24 speed light and the new(ish) Nikon SB 700 ?

Yes they are very different in terms of compatibility, the SB-24 is a relatively old flash and not truly compatable with any DSLR ( except maybe the D1?)

SB-700, like the 600, 800, 900 and 910 use the i-TTL system for automatic flash exposure metering comparable Nikon DSLRs.

Unless you are using a film camera, or setting your flashes up manually, I would avoid anything SB-2something and go for an SB-somethinghundred.
 
Nope not even the D1, that was D-TTL (the forerunner of I-TTL that we have now). Only of real use on a film camera in standard TTL mode or in non TTL auto mode on the DSLR's.

TBH, if you want decent compatibility for a current Nikon DSLR you are probably looking in price order

SB400
SB600 (secondhand)
SB800 (superb reliable beastie)
SB700
SB900
SB910

I think I'm right in saying that all but the SB400 are CLS (wireless) compatible, and all the others can act as masters and remotes except the SB600 which can be set as a CLS remote unit only.

Not overlooking the Nissin Di622 (approx=SB600) at around 110 Pounds, and Di866 (approx=SB900) at around 185 Pounds
 
Thanks very much for all of your feedback. I have got an old SB -24, must be at least 20 years old but it was state-of-the-art when I purchased it to go with my then new Nikon F4s which in my opinion was one of the best 35mm SLRs.

Looks like I am going to have to shell out then on something more compatible to go with my D7000. I have to bide my time as i'm not yet eligible to access the classifieds on here.

I'll still keep it though as it's useful for painting with light etc.

Yes still useful, especially if you invest in some cheap radio triggers for off-camera flash fun. I use 2 SB25s in manual mode with a D2x.

Check out strobist.com lighting 101 tutorials if you want to maximise the use of your older flash.
