Yes
Strange now Nikon supply the 70-200 VR with a horrible cheap soft lens case while the 80-200 comes with a fantastic hardcase.

I can go to Jessops and buy a soft case for £15 if i want something lighter to carry my 80-200 around in, but it is soooo good to have the hard case for travel and to keep the lens safe if using it with the shoulder strap, i never did that with the 70-200 for fear of damage with the soft case

Same with the 24-70 & 28-70 the former has a soft case while the 28-70's case is built like a tank..... progress I guess!

I prefer the soft ones, I've never used any of the hard cases and they normally end up in the loft somewhere, at least with the soft cases they take up a lot less room and are lighter

That was my point, i can buy a cheap soft case for £15 in jessops if i want to use that but having the hard case comes in really handy.

However to be supplied with a soft case and then upgrade to a hard case will set you back £50 if you so wished,
I brought a Lowepro case for my 24-70 as the supplied one is total pants.

Hard Cases, Padded cases? Whats that all about? Do mean the extra padding that's in the box when you buy a lens? I don't think they've ever left the box.

I mean Nikon supply crap cheap nasty cases with expensive lenses yet supply good quality cases with less expensive lenses, now what is all that about!

If you keep them in the loft or keep them in the boxes or even use them as intended it does not matter i just wonder why Nikon do it?

I think it's just old lenses come with the hard cases. The 80-200 even if you buy it new is still an old lens. All new lenses come with a padded soft case that has a belt loop on it.

Remember these are Pro lenses. Pros are more worried about getting the job done than faffing with cases. I know a few pros that don't even use a padded bag, they just throw their kit in a messenger bag and shoot.

Maybe so but we buy our own kit so do want protection. I don't carry my hard case for the 80-200mm round with me simply because I have a good rucksack to do the job but when it comes to flight etc, then the hard case will be coming with me. Nothing worse than getting to a job to find something's broken....

Both my 80-200 hard case and 24-70 soft case are just put away. Both lenses go straight in the bag. I do use the soft bags that came with the AFS50mm f1.4 and AFS 105mm f2.8 as they don't take any more space.

You don't get a hard case with a body, or a flash, or anything else. So I don't see the problem. If you need to rely on protection, buy it so it takes the whole kit.

Anyway, to the OP. Live with it, Nikon aren't going to go back to hard cases, they stopped that years ago.

But a body or a flash doesn't have a series of critically placed lenses.

You're right though, they won't go back to hard cases, but it doesn't mean the OP's observations aren't valid....

They are, and I appreciate the position but as (it would appear) most people are not using them is it not better to make them optional so everyone isn't paying for them and not using them?
