I have a Nikon D3200 and Nikon 105mm Micro, on the end of that is my new (I hope) pride and joy, my Metz 15 MS-1. The trouble is it doesn't matter what setting I try I just can't get them to sing from the same sheet. Although the flash goes off you wouldn't know it when looking at the end result.
Can anybody help please?

Have you got the flash connected to the camera with a PC flash cord or are you using the unit wirelessly?

Ideally I would like to do it wirelessly (iTTL), but if connecting the supplied cable is the only way then I would settle for that. Presumably that would give a full burst and I would have to go via the manual mode just like the old days.

How are you currently triggering the flash? I was under the impression that the D3200 didn't do iTTL without additional hardware.

Should just be case of making sure you've the flash synch speed set up (D3200 has a 1/200 second maximum sync speed.

Yes Martyn that's the theory anyway. I've now managed to get some pretty acceptable stuff with the flash cord. Your photo shows how I have it set up physically. I have the latest firmware I think ( ver 3.0) so now they just have to shake hands.

I'm not familiar with the Metz kit. What is the device mounted on the hot shoe?

Usually to use an iTTL flash you'd have either something like a su800 mounted on the hot shoe or a nikon flash that has a commander mode.
 
I agree and with my Metz hammerhead I have a different SCA module that plugs into either my Canon or my Nikon but the flash in question doesn't have a slot for a SCA as it is all done wirelessly.

By the way being new to this site can someone please tell me how to upload a photo. The photo is on my desktop as a screen grab jpg but the little window is asking for a http:// etc

P.S. connected by the flash cord my photos have a setting of 250 @ f32 ISO 800. Won't the ISO 800 give me a lot of noise, I love the DoF but don't want "grainy" as we used to say in my old Olympus OM10 days!

From what I read yesterday, the Metz is a slave unit and is actibated by the sensor covering the on board flash and the maximum flash synch speed on the D3200 is 1/200.

Personally, I'd drop the shutter speed below 1/200 to ensure things synch ok , drop the aperture to f16 which will still give you a decent DOF and this will in turn let you drop the ISO.

Grab the IMG code from photobucket and paste straight into the post, et al



click on the right hand bit where it says IMG code and it should copy the url to your clipboard and just paste the link into the post, either right click & paste on the mouse or Ctrl V on the keyboard :thumbs:

I have to say that when I saw my photo of the Hornet my 1st thought was "what the hell have I done now!" I had deleted the photo that was for this site as I was failing miserably. I'll give it another go later, in the mean time I presume I have to report myself to the administrator to get my 3 failed attempts removed!:lol:

Yup, it'll just a link to photobucket which will say you've deleted or moved the image.
 
Hi Martyn,
I don't suppose you have come up with the iTTL answer yet but in the meantime, what made you choose the Hornet picture or was it the 1st you came to?:)
 
First picture I came to; from the set up you've posted, don't see why the things aren't talking to each other. The main flash operates the 'ring flash' which is for all intents and purposes is a slave, so don't see why they aren't talking as long as the shutter speeds below 1/200.

Is the clip/sensor on the flash on the right way round?
