Nikon tc 20e iii - not impressed

So I have a D7000 with a 70-200mm 2.8
I purchased a teleconverter tc 20e iii after doing quite a bit of research and tried to ignore the ridiculous price tag but thought at least this would allow me to shoot at 400mm and get fairly good (sharp) photos at a reasonable distance .

We I'm not impressed so far, I tried shooting at f8 at around 380mm and its too soft. I've tried loads of different focus settings, shooting using a tripod, beanbag etc etc.
Has anyone used this combination before and got good results? If so what should I be doing to get a decent quality photo using this converter? tripod, 1/400 shutter speed, single spot focusing.

I'm thinking i've wasted £400 on this thing, maybe its faulty.
Maybe its only worth having if you use a 300mm 2.8 or 400mm 2.8

Any thoughts on this would be great.

With the VRII you should be getting a very reasonable image with the new 2x.

Yeah VR is off
shooting at shutter speeds above 1/400 @ f7, f8 , f9 on a tripod or beanbag still poor.

As a comparison I've used a Nikon 70-300mm on the same camera at f8 and taken a photo.

I've then taken a photo with the 70-200mm with teleconverter lens set at 150 i.e 300mm with converter and the results are poor compared to the results with a standard 70-300mm.

Has anyone on the forum got decent results with Nikon 70-200 and the 20e iii?
 
A mate of mine uses that combo & gets decent bird shots.
He had the older 2X tc previously, which he wasn't impressed with.
 
got liveview? That should tell if you can focus correctly for the start. Perhaps higher speed - 1/1000s. In general TCs eat IQ, and you may want to start with crazy primes like 300/2.8 to keep the sharpness up.
