Nikon teleconverter

What are your views on teleconverters please, are they worth the £300 odd they charge for them, I think I understand the basics of them.

You buy one at say 1.4x or 1.7x or 2.0x and it converts your zoom lenes by that much (hope that makes sense :bang making the zoom further, does it make your photos/images any less sharp? or the quality any less?

I have a really nice Nikor 55 - 200 lens now and am thinking of buying a 2.0x teleconverter instead of paying a shed load of money for a longer zoom lenes, am I thinking down the correct lines??

I tried one once with a sigma lens on a nikon body and could not get it to autofocus,i believe this is a common problem so try before you buy.

Only specific lens work with Tele Converters. Check this out
